Stalin's skyscraper on the square of the uprising. Metro stations “Ploschad Vosstaniya”, “Mayakovskaya” Vosstaniya Square meaning of the name

Uprising Square neznaiko wrote in January 20th, 2014

Probably every second person who comes to St. Petersburg leaves the Moscow railway station on Vosstaniya Square. The first thing a guest sees is Ligovsky Prospekt, always stuck in traffic jams, on the square itself there is an obelisk of victory and the building of the Oktyabrskaya Hotel with the inscription "Hero City Leningrad" on the facade.

Vosstaniya Square, n.v.

The square has a very interesting history. Also here you can notice the visual deception of the obelisk, and it has its own, no less interesting, history.

In 1765, Empress Elizaveta Petrovna ordered to build a church at the intersection of Nevsky Prospekt. In those days it was the border of that, the first St. Petersburg. A village was located on the site of the Smolny Cathedral, instead of Ligovsky Prospekt there was a water channel originating in the Liga River. In 1794, instead of the church, a stone church was laid, and in 1804 the construction was completed.
The Church of the Sign is named after the attached chapel. The main aisle was consecrated in the name of the Lord's entry into Jerusalem, the side chapels were consecrated in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and the Sign of the Mother of God.
The Church of the Sign was dismantled in early 1941. (The date 1936 is erroneous - the church was still active in the first half of 1937).

The square itself was formed in the 1840s in connection with the construction of the St. Petersburg - Moscow railway. A little later, the building of the Nikolaevsky (now Moscow) station was built.

It was built in the middle of the 19th century. The hotel was then called "Northern", "Big Northern", and after the revolution it became "October". In the 1920s, a city dormitory for the proletariat was organized in the hotel, where all Petrograd homeless children were taken. In short, the hostel was called GOP, and its juvenile inhabitants were called gopniks.

In 1909, a monument to Alexander III was erected in the center of the square. In October 1937, the monument was dismantled and transported to the courtyard of the Russian Museum. In 1994, the monument was erected in the courtyard of the Marble Palace.

Uprising Square, a monument to Alexander III

On November 17, 1918, the square, where large-scale events and manifestations of the February Revolution unfolded in 1917, was renamed the Uprising Square.
In the late 1930s, work began on the construction of the subway, which was frozen at the beginning of the Great Patriotic War and the blockade of the city.
During the war, Uprising Square was an active active point - the station worked (evacuation of residents of the besieged city), pillboxes were placed.

In the post-war period, in 1952, the square was reconstructed, a front square was laid out, in the center of which it was planned to later erect a monument in memory of the historical events of the city.

Interestingly: on Nevsky Prospekt in St. Petersburg, two high-rise dominants - the Tower of the City Duma and the Obelisk "To the Hero City of Leningrad" are regular pentagons in plan.
This creates a favorable effect from all vantage points and fits well into the urban landscape, which is why many citizens traditionally believe that both of these structures are square in their plan.

Uprising Square is located in the central district of Staraya Palmyra. It is one of the symbols of the city and is included in the historical cultural capital of the country. Vosstaniya Square is not a simple name. Her story is unique and interesting.

The Uprising Square, until the transfer of the capital back to Moscow, had a completely different name - Znamenskaya. It is located at the junction of Nevsky Prospekt, its only turn, and Ligovsky Prospekt. What is the reason for such a name of the area? The thing is that in the first third of the last century there was a church of the same name here. And finally the name "Znamenskaya" was assigned to it in the year of the beginning of the construction of the station, called "Nikolaevsky". In 1917, it is here that the bloody violent events of the last two Russian revolutions unfold. The famous February manifestos were proclaimed here, heavy battles and skirmishes took place here. And so next year the area is renamed in a modern way. In the middle of the 20th century, the Ploshchad Vosstaniya metro station was opened on the square. The station belongs to metro line 1. Inside, it is decorated with bronze sculptures that reflect the terrible events of the February and

Vosstaniya Square has a long history dating back to the time of Elizabeth. During the years of her reign, the Church of the Sign was founded here, a project that was carried out by Demertsov. It is worth noting that the church was rebuilt several times. The square itself was formed only in the second quarter of the 19th century, when the main ensemble of the square was laid according to the project of Yefimov. This was connected, first of all, with the construction of the second railway in the country, St. Petersburg (Ploshad Vosstaniya) - Moscow. The well-known architect Ton erected here, but then, as mentioned above, it was called Nikolaevsky. A little later, according to Gemlian's designs, the Znamenskaya Hotel, better known as the Oktyabrskaya Hotel, as well as the well-known clergy house designed by engineer Sokolov, will be erected. In the spring of 1909, a monument to Alexander the Liberator will be solemnly opened on the square, after 28 years the monument will be transported first to the Russian Museum, and then installed in the Marble Palace. During the Great Patriotic War, military installations were built on the square - it was a kind of springboard for all soldiers and commanders.

And already in 1945, the winners were greeted on a grand scale at the restored Moscow railway station. In the early 1980s, an obelisk was erected in honor of the 40th anniversary of the Great Victory. Monuments of this kind were erected in all hero cities by order of the Communist Party. is the symbol of the square.

Rebellion Square in St. Petersburg is not just a beautiful place, it is more than the elegance of monuments. This is a historic square! The place where Lenin spoke was visited by the church and Alexander II. This is the place where in 1917 the fate of the country was decided. And it must be preserved and protected. After all, it is not so difficult!

Vosstaniya Square is one of the main squares of St. Petersburg. It is located at the intersection of Nevsky and Ligovsky prospects. The square was founded in the 1840s by the architect N. E. Efimov and was called Znamenskaya, in honor of the Church of the Sign, which was located here until 1941. After the February Revolution in 1917, the square received its current name.

Here, both day and night, it is crowded, as the square is located: “Moskovsky railway station”, metro station “Ploshchad Vosstaniya”, hotel “Oktyabrskaya”, hotel “ParkInn”, as well as a wide variety of shops, cafes and restaurants. In the center of the square there is an obelisk "To the Hero City of Leningrad".

On Vosstaniya Square, as well as on other main squares of the city, demonstrations, holidays and various mass events often take place, during which it is very beautifully decorated and pleases the eyes of both residents and guests of the city.

Ground pavilion of the metro station "Ploshchad Vosstaniya"

The ground pavilion of the Ploshchad Vosstaniya metro station was built in 1955 (architects V.V. Gankevich, B.N. Zhuravlev, I.I. Fomin). It is a monument of history and culture and is protected by the state.

There is a memorial plaque on the building:

On this place was the Church of the Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem (Znamenskaya)

The wooden temple was built in 1765-1768. The stone church was erected in 1794-1804. designed by architect F.I. Demertsov. It contained the revered icon of the Mother of God "The Sign" (XIII century). Closed in 1938. Blown up in the spring of 1941.

(The memorial plaque was installed at the expense of A.G. Ananov)

The Ploshchad Vosstaniya metro station of the Petersburg metro is part of the Kirovsko-Vyborgskaya line (Line 1) and is located between Chernyshevskaya and Vladimirskaya stations.

Station "Ploshchad Vosstaniya"(based on the book “Guide to the streets and history of St. Petersburg: All sights within walking distance from metro stations / A.D. Erofeev. - M .: AST, 2015. - 447 p."):

Opening date: November 15, 1955
Architects: V.V. Gankevich, B.N. Zhuravlev, I.I. Fomin (1955, ground and underground pavilions); A.S. Getskin, V.P. Shuvalov (1961, ground pavilion at the Moscow railway station)
Engineer: E.A. Erganov

Bas-reliefs on pipons of the central underground hall:

  • “Speech by V.I. Lenin at the Finland Station "- sculptor A.I. Dolienko;
  • "IN AND. Lenin at the hut in Razliv” — sculptor V.B. Pinchuk; "Shot of Aurora" - sculptor A.V. Razumovsky;
  • "Storming the Winter Palace" - sculptor V.I. Tatarovich.

The ground lobby of the metro is a round building with risalits attached to the sides.

The composition is completed by a large rotunda with a spire, on which the letter “M” once flaunted in a laurel wreath. It was removed due to the risk of collapse.

The station, from which the first train departed on November 15, 1955, is decorated with decorative grilles in round air vents and round reliefs. All of them tell about the events of 1917. This is “Speech by V.I. Lenin at the Finland Station”, “V.I. Lenin at the hut in Razliv”, “Shot of Aurora”, and “Storm of the Winter Palace”. On the second left pylon on both sides, the image of Joseph Stalin has been preserved. He stands behind Lenin, speaking to the workers who have gathered on the square in front of the Finland Station. This is the only image of Stalin left in the St. Petersburg metro after 1961.

Ploshchad Vosstaniya became the first station with two exits. On August 14, 1960, the doors of Ploshchad Vosstaniya-2 opened in the new wing from the side. Before that, at the opposite end of the underground hall from the escalator, there was a bas-relief depicting Vladimir Lenin, made by sculptors Aron Pliskin and Vladimir Sychev.

On November 3, 1967, the Nevsko-Vasileostrovskaya line was opened. At the same time, Ploshchad Vosstaniya became a transfer station to Mayakovskaya. Two transitions were made on it: on the opposite side from the exit “Ploshchad Vosstaniya-2”, the tunnel leads to the center of the Mayakovskaya platform, and above the tracks four escalators (until recently three) rise to the end of the Mayakovskaya station.
