Why my chemical romance broke up. Will My Chemical Romance return? "Sigur Rós meets Nine Inch Nails and it's good" - the main motif of the comments to the new Icelandic song

It's been six years since the collapse My Chemical Romance, but fans continue to hope for a revival. This blog once covered rumors and speculation in the fan community with “IS MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE GETTING READY FOR REUNION? “That was almost a year and a half ago, and since then, it would seem, nothing has changed. No prerequisites and even hints of a reunion. But the fans are stubborn and patient people, waiting and waiting. Therefore, Gerard Way decided to “reassure” them again. In quotation marks and with a minus sign, of course.

Here is what he had to say in a recent interview when talking about their latest album “Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys” (2010): “When things get off to a good start and things go really well, people have a certain opinion about your work and you have to fight all the time to live up to that idea of you. Damn, everyone here knows what My Chemical Romance should be like! This makes it very difficult to know in which direction to move. As a result, you fall into the trap of constantly thinking, “Are we good enough?”

According to Gerard, My Chemical Romance has reached its peak and has struggled to live up to expectations. In other words, their only creative motivation was not the desire to express themselves through music, not the need to convey their ideas and feelings to the world, but the need to please the fans, to justify their expectations. As a result, in such a situation, an internal conflict always arises, hindering development. Many groups have faced a similar problem, but not all have been able to overcome it. My Chemical Romance is just one of them - they failed. The inability to resolve this contradiction eventually led to the disintegration of the group.

Gerard says that creativity has ceased to bring them joy, so there was only one way to break out of the vicious circle and break the system: disband the group. Which happened almost six years ago - the breakup was officially announced on March 22, 2013. Despite the prescription of years, Gerard still receives a lot of letters, proposals and questions about a possible reunion. He replies that he is flattered, it is very nice when you are not forgotten, but reunification is impossible.

Yet hope does not die. Moreover, Gerard himself, apparently, is not so firm in his decision. Then he said that he would not mind playing again with the former composition of My Chemical Romance, then he suddenly started talking about the fact that the world had changed a lot for the worse, became more chaotic, and therefore needed something positive. And what could be more positive for MCR fans than a reunion? Therefore, perhaps, we continue to hope and wait. Never say never. My Chemical Romance, come back! We are waiting.

2001-2013
My Chemical Romance is an American rock band formed in 2001 in New Jersey. It consists of: Gerard Way (vocals), Mikey Way (bass guitar), Frank Iero (guitar), Ray Toro (guitar).

The band was founded by Gerard Way and drummer Matt Pelissier, who became friends in high school. The first song they wrote was "Skylines and Turnstiles" (written by Gerard after the 9/11 tragedy he witnessed, which made him completely reconsider his outlook on life and take up music). They were soon joined by guitarist Ray Toro, an old friend of Gerard's. The band began rehearsing in the attic at Matt's house, and Mikey Way, Gerard's brother, was so impressed with the rehearsals that he decided to learn how to play the bass guitar. He succeeded in just six months, and soon he joined the group.

Of the influences on the team, we can single out Thursday and, to a lesser extent, Cursive. Most of MCR's compositions are loud, fast and aggressive songs, not devoid of melody. The group got its name from the book Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance by Irvine Welsh (the name was invented by the band's bassist Mikey Way).

Three months after the formation of My Chemical Romance signed a contract with Eyeball Records and began recording their debut album. The entire studio process took them only ten days, from May 15 to May 25, 2002. During the recording of the album, guitarist Frank Iero, who previously played in Pencey Prep, who also recorded for Eyeball, joined the group, but had already disbanded by that time. My Chemical Romance was compared to Thursday. Both groups are from New Jersey, labelmates. I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love was also produced by Thursday vocalist Geoff Rickly. After the release of the album, MCR (as My Chemical Romance is often shortened) toured with The Used, and 'Til Death.

In 2003 the band signed with Reprise Records. After touring with Avenged Sevenfold, the band began work on their second album, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. The album was released in 2004 and went platinum within a year. Four singles were released from the album, "Thank You for the Venom", "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)", "Helena" and "The Ghost of You".

After the release of this album, world fame came to the group. MCR took part in the Vans Warped Tour 2004, headlined the first Taste of Chaos festival, and toured with Green Day. In 2005, the band performed as headliners on the Vans Warped Tour.

After playing in Japan in August 2004, Matt Pelissier was replaced by Bob Bryar. The reason for Matt's departure was the frequent mistakes that he made during concerts, and because of which he constantly clashed with Ray Toro. In early 2005, the band took part in the Taste of Chaos tour and also supported Green Day on their American Idiot tour. They later toured the country with the Alkaline Trio and Reggie and The Full Effect. In the same year, My Chemical Romance and The Used collaborated on a cover version of David Bowie and Queen's hit "Under Pressure", all proceeds from the sale of which went to charity.

On March 21, 2006, MCR released a DVD titled Life on the Murder Scene. It includes the band's diary from its early days to the present, live performances, and the previously unreleased song "Desert Song".

In October 2006, the third album My Chemical Romance The Black Parade was released, which was produced by Rob Cavallo, known for his work with Green Day.

The first single from The Black Parade - "Welcome To The Black Parade" - was first performed at the MTV Awards and reached number one on the UK singles chart on October 15, 2006. The album itself went on sale in the second half of October 2006.

The album debuted at No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart, behind Robbie Williams' new album Rudebox, and at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, behind the soundtrack to the Disney television show Hanna Montana. In its first week in the US, the album sold 240,000 copies.

In February 2007, the band went on a world tour, and during the year three more singles were released - "Famous Last Words", "I Don't Love You" and "Teenagers". In the same year, the group visited Russia.

In July 2008, the band released their DVD, The Black Parade is Dead!. as the final chord of the patient's life. The record includes 2 concerts, one of which was filmed in Mexico. After the band went on vacation and promised fans a new album by the summer of 2009.

Not so long ago, another live Venganza (Spanish for “Revenge”) was released, containing on a usb-carrier in the form of a bullet 9 videos, not seen so far, of the second album tour.

My Chemical Romance drummer Bob Bryar left the band in March 2010. Bryar's departure, which was rumored a few weeks ago, was confirmed by the band's guitarist Frank Iero.

"4 weeks ago My Chemical Romance and Bob Bryar went their separate ways," he posted on the official website. “It was not an easy and painful decision for all of us. We wish him good luck in his future endeavors and hope that our fans will support us in this."

On November 22, 2010, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys was released.

Produced again by Rob Cavallo. Stylistically, MCR have moved away from their usual gloomy image, the new record is a mixture of rock and roll, disco and modern rock.

The first single "Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)", the album's forerunner, was released on September 28, 2010. It was followed by the internet single "The Only Hope For Me Is You" on October 12, available for download from iTunes. The third single was "Sing".

During the end of 2012 and beginning of 2013, ten b-sides of the Danger Days album, recorded in 2009 under the name Conventional Weapons, were released.

On March 22, 2013, the band announced their breakup on their website. The guys said that the previous 12 years had been a blessing for them, but all good things must come to an end.

Gerard Way (Gerard Way) is known to the "generation of 2007" as the leader of the American emo band My Chemical Romance, which ceased to exist in 2013 at the peak of popularity. Last year, he released a solo album, Hesitant Alien, which critics called bold and confident.

This fall, Gerard is going on a tour of Russia: his list includes major cities of our country - from Moscow to Vladivostok, including Yekaterinburg. Way himself is very proud of this: “Who else can boast of having played in the Urals and Siberia?” he says.

September 12, and we managed to contact him in advance and find out what he himself expects from the performance, whether he managed to “throw off the mask” and whether he will continue to surprise the fans.

You released your solo album Hesitant Alien a year ago and you said you wanted to take off the mask. Is it possible to say that you finally succeeded and now you appeared before the fans the way you really are?
- To be honest, for the last few years of My Chemical Romance, I have been myself. And yes, indeed, I wore a mask for a couple of years, started drinking again, because there was no way to be honest with myself. But what you see now is the real me. It was amazing, and finally I found freedom. Life is Beautiful!

Were there any thoughts during this time to revive the My Chemical Romance band? Or go back from Britpop to a heavier sound?
- I am often asked this question, I understand why, so I try to answer it as politely as possible. Despite all my warm feelings for My Chemical Romance, I'm not going back. I miss the guys and the relationship that was between us, but I'm not trying to return the atmosphere that was. Now I'm trying to find something new that would be just as special.

I don't think I'll ever be able to get rid of the Britpop sound or the alternative sound of the 90s in my work, because the music of my childhood has been with me throughout my life. But the fans, of course, can always hear something unexpected - in the ability to surprise them, I'm unlikely to ever change.

- Which musicians influenced you? Who are you listening to now?
- I listen to a lot of alternative bands from the 90s: Lush, Teenage Fanclub, Smashing Pumpkins. But I have a wide musical taste, I am a music lover. I think that among the latest records I would single out the Never-ending Story soundtrack and Kanye West's latest album.

- You yourself are an illustrator and produced comics. Who is your favorite comic book character?
- My favorite comic is Guardians of the Galaxy and my favorite superhero is Daredevil (Daredevil), I love him for his simplicity, I love his internal conflict, his flaws and how he tries to deal with them.

We know that you survived the attack and witnessed the September 11th terrorist attack, then you decided that something needed to be changed in this world, and you took up music. But not everyone can make such decisions. What advice would you give to young people who find themselves in a difficult situation?
- I think the main thing I can advise is to understand that the only thing you can take control of in this life is yourself and your attitude towards others. Stop trying to control what is happening and take control of yourself - this is the best gift that you can give others, then you may be able to contribute or make a difference. Be honest with yourself, be kind to yourself, be who you always wanted to be.

- You are raising a daughter, who would you like to see her in the future? Would you like her to become a musician too?
- I will support her in any endeavors, well, maybe, except for her becoming the star of Vine (service of short videos, - ed. note), everything else - please, if everything is fair. In fact, I would like her to become whatever she wants, so that her dreams come true - they are much more important than mine.

You will not be in Russia for the first time, but in Yekaterinburg - for the first time. Is the Russian public different from the public in other countries?
- I am delighted with the Russian public! I am very glad that I have common themes and interests with the fans, the audience here especially warmly welcomes me, they are crazy, smart, funny and cute.

- What do you expect from the concert in Yekaterinburg? Do you know something about our city?
- Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the city, but I really want to learn everything as soon as possible! Literally impatient! I went on a tour of Russia and Ukraine to see more than I had seen before, I just could not miss the opportunity to visit such beautiful and hospitable places.

To the creation of an American group My Chemical Romance from New Jersey, vocalist and guitarist Gerard Way and drummer Matt Pelissier were inspired by the terrorist attacks in New York on September 11, 2001 - the guys decided to express their feelings in this way. They hired Ray Toro as a second guitarist to make it easier for Way to sing. Soon the guys recorded the first demo tapes, after listening to which Gerard's younger brother Mickey Way decided to join them as a bass player. He also suggested the name for the group, inspired by Irvine Welsh's book Ecstasy: Three Narcotic Happiness Stories. The group managed to sign a contract with the label Eyeball Records and then meet the guitarist-vocalist of the band Pencey Prep. Frank Yero, who joined My Chemical Romance after the breakup of his team in 2002 and immediately before the recording of the debut album I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, released in July 2002. The album was produced by the band's vocalist Thursday Jeff Rickly, whom MCR befriended during concerts together. From that moment on, the group began to attract the attention of new fans. A tour with Avenged Sevenfold and a contract with Reprise Records soon followed. New job My Chemical Romance- Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge - was released in 2004 and went platinum in less than a year. The band traveled to Japan before Pelissier left MCR in July and was replaced by Bob Bryar.

In 2005 My Chemical Romance actively touring - participating in the Taste Of Chaos tour, Warped Tour 2005, accompanying, and also recording the famous song by Queen and David Bowie "Under Pressure" together with The Used. In March 2006, the live album Life On The Murder Scene was released with two DVDs included - one containing the band's biography, the second containing video clips and recordings of live performances. June 2006 also saw the release of the DVD Things That Make You Go MMM!, containing interviews with people who knew the members of MCR before they became famous.

In April 2006, together with producer Rob Cavallo, the band began working on their new album, eventually called The Black Parade. Video clips were shot for two singles from the album - "Welcome To The Black Parade" and "Famous Lat Words", and while working on the latter, Gerard Way and Bryar were injured, so several concerts had to be canceled.

Shortly before the release of the album, My Chemical Romance decided to play one show at Hammersmith Palace in London, before which several dozen people participated in a promotion - some stood dressed in black robes at the entrance to the palace, others walked back and forth with banners "The Black Parade". Already before the start of the concert, it was announced that MCR would not be able to perform, and The Black Parade would perform instead. Initially upset fans quickly realized that this was just a prank, and the band on stage is exactly what they came for. The tour in support of the album, released in October 2006, began in February 2007. In April, Mickey Way, who wished to be with his wife, was replaced by a mutual friend of the musicians, Matt Cortez. On tour with Muse, MCR and her team, as well as the team, got food poisoning, so 6 shows had to be cancelled. However, the group soon played the required shows in the company with. For the album, The Black Parade MCR received several awards and nominations.

In the spring of 2008, 13-year-old Hanna Bond, who belonged to the "" movement, committed suicide. This case was widely reported in the newspapers, especially in connection with the MCR, who were considered almost the legislators of this. Nevertheless, the fans stood up for the group, and the musicians themselves denied their emo affiliation in every possible way and spoke disrespectfully about the media, which, in their opinion, completely groundlessly linked their music and the suicide of a teenager.

In 2009 My Chemical Romance as a single, they recorded the Bob Dylan song "Desolation Row", which was included in the soundtrack for the film "Watchmen". As a gift to the fans, the band also decided to release some of the live performances from the concert in Mexico on a flash card shaped like a bullet, where exclusive photos of the musicians could also be found. This kit, called Venganza, hit stores in April. In May, information appeared on the band's website that the musicians had decided to start recording their fourth album. Jeraj Way promised that the new work would be real rock, full of hate. In late July and early August, MCR stopped recording to play two unscheduled shows in Los Angeles, featuring several new songs. In March 2010, it became known that Bob Briar had left the band. In September, a short video appeared on the Internet, where the musicians My Chemical Romance fought with some strange creatures to the accompaniment of the song "Na Na Na", which was officially presented a little later on the radio, and the album itself - Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys - was released in November 2010 and received laudatory reviews . Drummer Michael Pedicon went on tour in support of the disc with the band.
